Calligraphy communicates in a very special way.
Calligraphy is the art of creating beautiful symbols and images by hand and arranging them with integrity, harmony and rhythm. Some art experts say “reading calligraphy is like hearing music with your eyes.” By carefully forming each letter and symbol by hand, a professional calligrapher, like Donya Burmeister of the Elegant Letter, creates a unique connection between artist and recipient. Bringing past to present through the age-old “writing” of letters, calligraphy transcends today’s mechanical means of communication with smart phones and computers into a unique message imbued with the human touch.
Donya attended Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles and Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Oregon. It was there that her art professor sparked Donya’s interest in calligraphy by encouraging her to study with noted artist and calligrapher Lloyd Reynolds, at the Portland Art Museum.
In her own words: “I’ve been an artist all my life. When I began the study of calligraphy, I quickly became fascinated with the art of creating letters. Since then, calligraphy has become a huge part of my professional work and never fails to fulfill my own creative vision.”
Donya also received advanced instruction in calligraphy from Carol DuBosche of Portland, Oregon and Cliff Mansley of Heirloom Artists in Lake Oswego, Oregon. Mr. Mansley generously shared his expertise and precise standards of excellence in a wide range of calligraphic adaptations including Gothic and Copperplate styles. Donya works in a spacious Lake Oswego studio that serves as a space for her professional work and for teaching classes and workshops in calligraphy. The studio includes a full-service frame shop with a wide selection of archival mats and frame styles. Please
